The emphasis of the HPVA laboratory is on the application of our unique capabilities in conducting certain product tests for R&D and for compliance with national codes and standards. Our clients include industry, government, and other laboratories. The HPVA testing laboratory has been in operation for nearly 40 years. The 6,000 square foot laboratory in Reston, Virginia was established for determining important performance properties of hardwood plywood and other materials. Throughout the years, HPVA has developed a series of specialized services available on a commercial basis. HPVA, working with the Composite Panel Association, helped develop the ASTM D 5582 Two-Hour Desiccator Test for Small Scale Testing and the ASTM E 1333 Large Chamber for Formaldehyde Testing. Top The laboratory fire testing capability is based on ASTM test standards. Our specialized testing services include general flammability, smoke, gas analysis, and rate of heat release. Products tested include wood, paper, plastics, metal, textiles, masonry, and composite materials. HPVA’s technical staff participates in ASTM standards committees E-05 on Fire and F-07 on Aerospace and Aircraft. Top Flame Spread and Smoke Testing
HPVA is a leader in formaldehyde test method development. Our services include product emission and occupational exposure measurements:
Two-Hour Desiccator Test
HPVA performs an array of general testing services including large-scale ASTM E 72 wall racking strength, moisture content, linear expansion, specific gravity, permeability, and glue bond integrity of plywood, flooring, and doors. Top
HPVA develops and publishes voluntary product standards for the industry, including:
HPVA laboratory technicians are approved by the Federal Aviation Administration to perform flammability testing of aircraft components. Several national building code organizations (BOCA, ICBO, and SBCCI) recognize HPVA through the National Evaluation Service Committee Report No. NER-TL329. The Department of Defense includes HPVA on its Defense Logistics Agency Qualified Laboratory List for fire testing (QLL No. 9927). Top
INSPECTION AND PRODUCT CERTIFICATION As part of an industry testing, inspection, and product listing program, HPVA’s field inspectors visit plants nationwide to verify flame spread performance, formaldehyde emission, and structural properties of hardwood plywood panels. Products that conform to requirements can earn HPVA’s nationally recognized verification stamp. Top
Association members often call on the technical staff with questions about regulatory issues or when they need information about product grades, performance, or properties. HPVA frequently provides input to government agencies that develop or modify regulations. HPVA educates its members about key regulatory issues, including:
The technical staff, which has often played a significant role in shaping industry policy, meets periodically with other associations and regulatory agencies. To keep members informed of critical developments, the Association publishes technical research studies and prepares position papers that are submitted to organizations considering regulatory actions.
